As with any type of residence, problems are more likely to occur when a static caravan is left unoccupied for extended periods, making it important to ensure that everything is fully operational and in tip-top shape upon your return after winter.
We have put together some tips on how to get your caravan ready for the new season after the winter break. The season always starts on 15th February at Fir View Tan Y Ffridd.
Before heading to your static caravan, it is a good idea to put together a comprehensive kit of cleaning products. Remember to include anti-mould and mildew treatments, as well as a small tool kit for any type of quick fix.
As the first step upon arrival, we recommend taking some time for a thorough visual inspection, both internally and externally. This should include the roof, guttering, window seals and seams, any skylights, the door and underneath the caravan. Performing this inspection can help to identify any obvious problems such as cracks, damp issues or other types of damage which may have occurred during bouts of severe weather.
It is also important to check the pipes and their connections for frost damage. Inside the static caravan, inspect for signs of dampness or mould that may have appeared. The UK generally has a damp climate that is worse during the winter.
A full spring clean is one of the best ways to open up your caravan. This helps to get rid of any dust, dirt and cobwebs that may have built up over the winter period and makes sure that all the furniture is fresh and ready for use. It also gives you a chance to check the caravan for signs of damage, mould or mildew which may have appeared in your absence as well as checking all the fittings and fixtures, light bulbs, carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors to ensure that everything is good working order.
Other checks include electrics and plumbing to make sure there are no leaks from the toilet or the taps.
Following the winter power-down, your static caravan will need to be reconnected to the mains water supply, and the gas and electricity supply. After the water has been reconnected, run all the taps to check the pipes for any leaks or cracks and to ensure the water supply is flowing.
The gas bottle will also need to be connected (it is always a good idea to purchase a spare). A basic test to check if the gas is working is to try using the oven and the hot water – if any issues are experienced, however, we recommend contacting a certified gas engineer. They will be able to perform a thorough check of the pipes and heating to ensure that everything is ready and working for the new season.
For those of you who utilised our winter drain-down service – give the office a call and we will arrange for you to be all hooked up and connected again.
Dampness and mould are typically caused by excess moisture in the air and a lack of ventilation. This tends to be worse when the caravan is not in use during the cold weather season. Mould can be removed with specific products and running a dehumidifier can help to remove excess moisture from the air.
