How To Keep Your Static Caravan Cool During The Summer

Most static caravan owners invariably opt to spend the warmer months of the year at the park site, leaving the caravan wintered down for the cool season. Whilst the summer brings with it welcome sunshine and greater opportunities for exploring the outdoors, it can as a consequence, become uncomfortably hot in the static caravan during particularly warm spells.

Static caravans are smaller in size than most brick-and-mortar buildings, they are also built out of different materials. This starts at the base, which is typically constructed on a durable, galvanised chassis with anti-corrosion properties, with cladded walls typically made out of high-density wood composite. They are both sturdy and aesthetically pleasing, whilst at the same time flexible enough to be moved. By contrast, brick and mortar buildings are studier, better insulated but extremely rigid, making relocation impossible.

As with log cabins or summer houses, static caravans can become unbearably hot when exposed to direct sunlight during long hot summer days. Modern static caravans are built with insulated walls and rooves, helping to regulate temperatures.

Keeping Cool

Maintain Good Air Flow

A flow of air can help to cool your static caravan considerably – during the day, the windows on the shaded side of caravan should be opened, once the sun has set the remaining windows can be opened.

A fan can be used to help circulate fresh air coming in from the windows.

Keep It Cool During The Day

During the day, keep all curtains and blinds drawn to prevent direct sunlight from entering, this reduces the amount of heat and also helps to prevent sun related damage to any soft furnishings, indoor plants, as well as photographs or paintings on display.

If the caravan is located in a particularly sunny spot, window films can be fitted to the window to help prevent sun or UV rays from penetrating the interior.

Cook Outside If Possible

Avoid turning on the cooker and the oven, if possible, as this generates a substantial amount of additional heat – something which may be very welcome in the cooler months, but stifling and uncomfortable once it becomes warmer. Sunny days also offer excellent opportunities for barbecues and outdoor food preparation.

Check Your Light Bulbs

Incandescent or Halogen type bulbs are known to produce a lot of heat, switch to LED lights which generate less heat and use less energy to run.

Switch Off Appliances

Appliances such as toasters and kettles can also produce a fair amount of heat in a small, closed space, making it a good idea to limit their use on hot days and keep anything non-essential switched off.

Create Shade

If there is no natural shade near your static caravan, create some by fitting an awning to the roof.

Stay Hydrated

Make sure that everyone stays well hydrated by drinking plenty of water, that includes any pets too.
