This moderately challenging route is suitable for walkers of all ages and abilities. The walk offers 4.1 miles 6.7km of trail near Welshpool with lots of points of interest along the way and well-defined paths. The route circles the town of Welshpool climbing through the medieval deer park of Powis Castle, then up to the castle – a fascinating focal point for walkers to admire – before crossing meadows and pastures, then joining the Montgomery Canal and returning back into town. This walk includes several steady climbs, whilst offering spectacular views and an abundance of wildlife. Some of the trail crosses fields with cattle and sheep, before continuing onto the canal path. This is a favourite local walk of many that takes approximately 2 hours to complete with the option of stopping off to have a drink at Powis Castle.
The fascinating Montgomery canal trail brings wildlife and tranquillity right into the centre of Welshpool and offers various short walks that are suitable for day trips. One of our favourites is the Welshpool to Berriew walk – this extends to approximately 5 miles 8 km of flat pathways suitable for all ages and abilities. The route begins in Welshpool, taking walkers to the quaint village of Berriew were some refreshments can be enjoyed before heading back. Along the way, walkers pass by Powis Castle, Belan locks and Berriew aqueduct and the towpath along the way, whilst enjoying the peace and harmony of natural environment all around them. The path itself is a haven for wildlife, with many sites of Scientific Interest; there is an 8-mile stretch of the Montgomery Canal that has been awarded the Green Flag status due to its high environmental standards.
Glyndwr’s Way is a National Trail offering a long-distance walk of 135m/217km that can either be undertaken as a continuous journey with pre-booked over night stays along the way – this typically takes around 9/10 days – or alternatively, stretches of the trail can be enjoyed as day walks. The trail is named after Owain Glyndŵr, a medieval Welsh Prince that organised a rebellion against English King Henry IV in 1400.
Glyndwr’s Way starts in Knighton Powys and ends in Welshpool Powys. The last leg of the trail from Meifod to Welshpool is an 11 mile 17.5km stretch that offers a long day’s walk featuring spectacular views, parkland, woodland, hills, farmland, a lake and wildlife before ending in Welshpool.
This trail offers 10.5 miles 16.9km of trail and is the ninth segment of the Offa’s Dyke Path – it begins in Welshpool on Buttington Bridge on the Montgomery tow path and ends in Llanymynech. This picturesque path is rich in wildlife and features numerous points of interest such as locks and charming keeper’s cottages. It takes around 4 hours to complete and is considered a moderate to challenging walk.
This route climbs up to Admiral Rodney’s Pillar – a monument built in 1781 – 82 to commemorate the naval victories of Sir George Brydges Rodney. The walk begins in the small village of Middletown and follows the footpaths north past Moel Y Golfa before going into the Breidden Forest through the beautiful woodland trails up to the summit of Breidden Hill. The monument stands at 366 metres offering magnificent views over the surrounding countryside – it is also rich in wildlife with various species of birds and regular deer sightings in the forested areas, making this an excellent choice of walk for a day out. The trail is moderately challenging, 4.10 miles 6.6 km long and takes approximately 2 – 2.5 hours to complete.
