With climate change more topical than ever before, many of us are looking to find ways to reduce our carbon footprint and do our bit to protect the environment and this includes during our leisure time. There are several ways in which we can make our static caravans more environmentally friendly, including but not limited to the following:
Recycle as much as possible – this ultimately helps to reduce general waste being sent to landfill and incinerators as well as helping to conserve natural resources, cut carbon emissions, save energy, and reduce the demand for raw materials. A kitchen compost is also a good way to put vegetable and fruit waste back into the ground in a productive way.
Eco-friendly products are ones which do not harm the environment – many of them are made from recycled materials, although some are made from ethically produced raw materials. Examples of easily accessible eco-friendly products which can be used in your static caravan include items such as cloth shopping bags, recycled toilet paper, eco-friendly cleaning products, LED light bulbs and A+ energy rated appliances. It is also a good idea to try to buy local produce wherever possible and to reduce plastic consumption.
Installing double glazing offers a good range of eco and cost-friendly benefits. It keeps the caravan better insulated and warmer, reduces condensation and the likelihood of mould and mildew, lowers energy consumption, which is better for the environment, and saves money. It also brings with it the added benefit of extra sound proofing.
Much in the same way as we try to reduce costs in our brick-and-mortar properties by installing smart metres and trying the heating bills down, we can do the same in our static caravans. In general, static caravans tend to use less energy due to their smaller size, however, electric heaters can be costly. So, one way of reducing consumption is to add some extra layers of clothing when the temperature drops and use the heating as a last resort. Another way to reduce energy costs is to ensure that any appliances not in use, are switched off, rather than left on standby.
Depending on the type of static caravan and the location, installing solar panels on the roof may be a good option depending on the amount of energy the panels produce in relation to the money spent. It is important to check with the site manager to check they allow the arrangement.
Holidaying at home and subsequently reducing the environmental damage caused as a result of aircraft emissions is a good way of being environmentally friendly. It also eliminates the hassle and stress of getting to and from the airport and the hours of travel time – providing more hours of relaxation and less harm to the environment.
Many static caravan owners view their caravan as a second home and as such seek to create a home from home – this means investing in reusable items rather than adopting the use of disposable items, something which is more likely to occur when holidaying abroad in a temporary accommodation.
