A Quick History of Mid Wales,...

[Members Page] [Caravan buyers Guide]
Meifod (meaning summer residence) nestles in one of the most beautiful valleys in Mid Wales, hosting the remains of Mathrafal Castle, which was the main residence of past Princes of Powys.

Other famous settlers, Quakers Charles and Thomas Lloyd, who's family founded Lloyds Bank, resided at Plas Dolobran and had a great influence on bringing industry to this part of Wales in the 18th Century.
Llanfair Caereinion is a small market town some 10 miles west of Welshpool and is a busy, thriving small community. It is perhaps known for its Llanfair Light Railway, a narrow gauge railway that is a delightful way of seeing the lovely countryside.
Other attractions include Clawedd Spout, a well on a southern hill on the outskirts, is reputed to have healing qualities and to have a strong association with the old saints of Meifod. Pontrobert village, named after Robert-ap-Oliver, who lived at Cynhinfa in the Parish of LLangynyw, stands proud on the banks of the river Vyrnwy, and the small village of Dolanog, with its infamous water turbine, installed in the river in 1922, helped propel Dolanog into the 20th century.
As well as its rich seam of history, Meifod is an excellent centre for nature walks, where one takes time to relax, look and listen to the world of nature.
