Static Caravan Insurance Information - FAQ

Here long standing park manageress Judy Weight with 27 years experience answers some typical questions regarding insurance.
We would not advise it! Not only do you risk losing the contents but also your complete static caravan holiday home, with nothing to show for all your hard work and expense to obtain it in the first place! For the sake of paying £250 - £300 a year on a "New for Old" static caravan insurance policy which guarantees that you get a get a brand new static caravan should the worst happen it is simply not worth it. Admittedly, statistics indicate that the majority of people do not need to claim on their insurance policy, but what happens if you turn out to be one of the exceptions? At the very leat paying an insurance premium gives you peace of mind.
Yes and no! It pays to check the wording on your policy. "Market value only" caravan insurance can leave you high and dry in a total loss claim as you would only receive what your caravan is worth today, which in most instances is not enough for you to purchase another static caravan and continue living the caravanning lifestyle you enjoy. We insure our caravanners on a "New for Old" static caravan insurance policy basis which covers against total loss, fire, theft, storm, flood, escape of oil or water, impact, subsidence, vandalism and terrorism. For the extra £20 a year this insurance policy costs it is well worth it in the sense that it is calculated on the size of your static caravan rather than the year. Meaning that regardless of the age and current market value of your 35 x 12 foot static caravan, for example purposes; in a total loss claim your insurance would pay out at least £18,000.
Not quite. In the event of a claim, your policy pays out the sum you had already agreed less any excess you agreed to pay. Like car insurance, the amount of excess you agree to pay the lower your yearly insurance premiums. Taking the example above, our New for old £275 p.a insurance premium on a 35 x 12 foot static caravan would resort with a total loss payout of £18,000 and £50 excess costs.
Just like car insurance, it pays to shop around, and the easiest and most time effective way of doing this is via the internet. Simply get several quotations and compare them. Make sure that you are comparing like with like mind, by entering exactly the same information and having the same insurance policy for every quote.
The best way to avoid any hassle is to go under your caravan holiday home parks block insurance scheme. Not only because there is safety in numbers but because they will take care of all the paperwork and administration for you and sort out your claim should the worse happen.

If you take out your own policy then this will only really happen if you have underestimated the value of your policy. Be open and honest when filling out your form, concealing relevant information may make  the policy void in the event of a claim and as tempting as paying £20 less insurance premium each year may be; choose "new for old" caravan insurance cover if you don't want to end up with a payout which represents a fraction of the cost of a new replacement. To be on the safe side, specify accidental damage cover, especially if you have small children.
